CHAPTER 5

TREES AND WOODLAND GLADES

Many of our commonest garden inhabitants originally lived in woodlands, which have suffered enormous declines in extent across the UK. While deep woodland can never be replicated exactly in a garden, in fact most wildlife activity occurs in the margins or in the glades of woods where there is more light. By artful planning, you can compress what in a real forest or wood might require an acre into a miniature-reserve in the corner of the garden. Trees do not have to be large to be effective for wildlife. Certainly the mighty oak hosts more species than any other native tree, but the hawthorn and the silver birch are not far behind. Both are suitable for small and medium gardens.

From the point of view of a bird, a bat, a butterfly or other flying insect, a tree is vertical ‘ground’, full of good things to eat. They’re living sky-scraper hotels, with restaurants on every floor. A tree trunk may occupy a square metre of the garden but it provides a thousand cubic metres of surfaces in the air.
